Air travel is the safest, the FAA says. But the FAA never figured the risk with Charles Rane on board. "The Rane of Terror" has masterminded four terrorist attacks. Soon there will be a fifth – and that's bad news for the passengers on Flight 163. But there's good news too: the man in seat 57! Wesley Snipes plays John Cutter, an undercover security operative who enters the lavatory and exits to find Rane (Bruce Payne) and his gang have taken over. Cutter's next move is clear. Do. Or be done to.
I really hated Passenger 57 the first time I saw it. Frustrated by it's lack of ambition, it's formulaic, a to b plot framework and shorthand characterisation. Rather vexed with the by-the-numbers, underdeveloped "love interest" that is obligatory in such films, and that's to say nothing of the two unwritten rules of race that appear in Hollywood movies.

One is that a black actor (of which there are disgracefully few in US movie circles) cannot appear in a film without being consciously aware of his skin colour and make constant references to it. ("Always bet on black" is one of the subtler quips Wesley is forced to utter). The other rule is that if a character is English they will always turn out to be the villain. An easy way to end such films would be to blow away any supporting cast membersoonthey ask "I say old man, could I have a cup of tea?" - it would save a lot of time and trouble.

Then there is the general laziness of the script, with its mere handful of decent lines and major plot inconsistencies. The character that yells the title quote of this review highlights the general stupidity of the entire premise, while Snipes (an air security chief who's afraid of flying) attempts to leave by cutting it's fuel then jumping off.

About 20 minutes later, after a vaguely entertaining if pointless run-around a fairground, Wesley gets back on the hijacked plane - by driving a car parallel to it's takeoff then jumping on the front wheel in mid air. All this far-fetched, testosterone-fuelled daftness irritated me when I first saw the film upon it's release, but seeing it all again I've come to realise that maybe Passenger 57 is more fun if you don't take it so seriously.

Okay, this is treadmill stuff for Snipes - Rising Sun had a decent plot and I think he gives a better performance when camp,in Demolition Man, but here he does sort of okay in a very silly film. Of course, the major problem with the film is Wesley's opposition: balding middle-aged old men and bespectacled young boys are sent to face a huge, pumped-up Wesley who has the abilities of seemingly every form of martial arts going. There's no real physical threat to the central character; therefore there's no real tension or drama. Also odd is Charles Rane's (Bruce Payne) motivation - his desire to hijack the plane is merely to escape the death penalty, but what was his goal on all the previous occasions? Money? Politics? We never really get to find out, we just have to accept this mana credible terrorist because we're told that he is and that his dad never bought him toysa child.

The film moves along nicely enough, and is pretty well-directed, a mid-price vehicle of no real consequence that leaves after 90 minutes without truly overstaying it's welcome, but then not really making a mark either. Not ashamed to be dumb, it saunters along and then concludes, with no message, no moral implication and no agenda. Just mindless entertainment and content to be just that - I gave it a 4.
If the only thing you're interested in when you watch an action movie is guns blazing and fight scenes, then this will satisfy. There's a lot of gunfighting in this one, and Wesley Snipes definitely proves that he knows something about the martial arts. His fight scenes are well done for the most part. In general, though, the movie repeatedly insists on descending into silliness, with a story that makes very little sense, evenactions movies go.

Snipes plays John Cutter, a security expert who's just been hired to be chief of security for Atlantic International Airlines. He boards a flight for Los Angeles not knowing that the FBI is transporting a vicious terrorist on the same flight. The opening scenes involving terrorist Charles Rane (Bruce Payne) and his attempt to escape the FBI by fleeing a plastic surgeon's office, where he was apparently going to have his appearance changed, was pretty dramatic and established the nature of that character reasonably well. Unfortunately, the extended opening development of Cutter seemed unnecessary and overlong. The real problem here though (and where the movie lost all credibility with me), has to do with Rane's plan for hijacking the flight. Sly Delvecchio (Tom Sizemore) - who's one of the bigwigs with the airline - keeps complaining that the FBI didn't tell the airline that they'd use that flight to transport a dangerous criminal. But that makes sense to me. Why tip anybody off? So even the airline doesn't know that he's going to be on the plane. How, then, did Rane manage to get not just one but two of his people on board the plane - notpassengers butcrew? Either he got them hired by the airline specifically for this operation or he recruited two employees. Either way, they'd have to have known in advance that he was going to be on this particular flight and arranged to work this particular flight by bidding on it in advance, because these things are arranged by seniority. Sure, there could have been an FBI mole who tipped him off, but I doubt this decision was made weeks in advance in order to facilitate all these arrangements, and there's still the problem of getting the flight attendant and baggage handler scheduled to work this flight. A rather silly and overly convenient plot device, if you ask me.

Once this is over, there's very little of note and nothing much you remember about it. It's an action flick among action flicks - but even sillier than most, and adding nothing original to the genre. However, I did enjoy Cutter's comment to Rane - "always bet on black!" 2/10
